Where to Publish?

project

A database of for-profit and non-profit journals in biology, annotated by publisher type, business model, APC, Scimago rank, and partnership with Peer Community In (PCI).

Academic publishing is a market worth roughly €7.6 billion per year, with profit margins of 30–40% captured largely by a handful of for-profit publishers. Article processing charges (APCs) for open access publishing can reach €9,500 per paper, creating a system where public research funds are transferred to private publishers under the banner of open access.

WhereToPublish? was built to make the landscape navigable: it is a filterable database of biology journals annotated by field, publisher type (non-profit, for-profit, or university press), business model (diamond open access, gold open access, hybrid, or subscription), APC, Scimago rank, and partnership with Peer Community In (PCI).

The project is collaborative: new journals and corrections can be submitted via a Google Form, and the full data is openly available. The live site is at WhereToPublish.github.io, with documentation and contribution guidelines on the wiki.
